Bright DIY Decor: A Sparkling Spiral Mirror!
A Sparkling Spiral Mirror!
So, you're probably here because: Decor and DIY are amazing! Your house desperately needs some dazzle-up action! You saw the picture of what we're making, and knew that this was the post for you!
Well, those ARE valid reasons! This post is going to guide you on how to make a fantastic spiral mirror craft.
To DTCY (do this craft yourself), you will need:
- 36 bamboo sticks/thin paper tubes, 42 to 6 cm in length, each stick/tube 1 cm less than the other in length
- MANY small circle mirrors, medium circle mirrors, large-ish circle mirrors, and diamond mirrors (basically, a bunch of decorative mirrors)
- Optional: If you don't have all these tiny mirrors, keep some aluminum foil with you.
- A big circle mirror for the center measuring 12 cm in diameter
- Cardboard
- Scissors
- A pencil
- A ruler
- Spray paint/paint
- Strong glue/hot glue gun
- Optional: beaded string
- Nail and hammer (this is just for the hanging-up part)
- Strong string
May we now: BEGIN!
Step 1:
Take your cardboard and trace a circle around your big circle mirror, with an extra inch, i.e. make a circle with a diameter of 14 cm.
Step 2:
Make 36 divisions equally spaced across your circle, each of them passing through the center. Use your ruler to make them straight, and make sure they all pass through the center.
Step 3:
Take out your bamboo sticks, scissors, and ruler. Leaving 1 stick measuring 42 cm, and for the rest of the sticks, cut off 1 cm, 2 cm, 3 cm, and so on, so that each stick measures 1 cm less in length than the other.
P.S. If you don't have bamboo sticks, take a large newspaper and make paper tubes out of it by rolling and gluing it along a thin cylindrical material. Then adjust the lengths. I honestly prefer using bamboo sticks/barbeque sticks because it's a whole lot easier having sticks premade.
Step 4:
Next, paint your bamboo sticks (or spray paint them) to give a neat look. I spray-painted mines' a vibrant, fluorescent orange!
Step 5:
Decide a pattern for your mirrors. You can see my pattern down below. Step 6 is for my dear readers who don't have decorative mirrors.
Optional: Step 6:
If you don't have decorative mirrors, do this step.
Cut out cardboard shapes using your cardboard, and wrap them around with aluminum foil. Use an iron to make it smooth and reflective.
Step 7:
Use your glue and stick your decorative mirrors onto your sticks. For the first few sticks, keep the whole pattern, and for the next few sticks, remove one element. Continue this until you get to the smallest stick.
Step 8:
Take your sticks and glue them onto the dividers on your 14 cm diameter cardboard circle, putting approximately 2 cm of the stick into the cardboard circle.
Step 10:
Make a pattern on the sticks so that it all spirals in at the end.
Optional: Step 11:
Use your beaded string and circle around your large mirror if you want! I highly recommend this, it adds a finishing touch!
Step 12:
Hammer a nail into the wall on where you want to hang up this gorgeous decoration. Then, tie a string and glue it tightly with the cardboard circle behind your mirror craft. BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL while you hang this up! It's a pretty delicate piece! I speak from experience. (let's just say I ended the life of the papertube mirror...😅)
And there ya have it! A free and pulchritudinous decoration!
Toodles,
Anika
